Burnout is more common than ever. Whether you're a high achiever in a demanding job, searching for answers to debilitating health issues that keep getting blamed on your weight or anxiety, or navigating life as a neurodivergent or disabled person struggling to find proper accommodations—the result is the same: burnout. Breaking free from the cycle can feel overwhelming, even hopeless. But there is a way forward. The key lies in understanding and strengthening your nervous system.
Strengthening your nervous system isn’t about "finding your zen" or becoming a monk. It’s not even about eliminating stress—that would be impossible in modern life. Stress reduction isn’t the answer. Resilience is.
In this context, resilience means how efficiently a system can return to baseline after a disturbance. So when we talk about nervous system regulation, what we really mean is nervous system resilience. Can we strengthen our nervous systems to become more adaptable to stress? The more resilient your nervous system, the less burnout you’ll experience, the more manageable anxiety and depression become, and the fewer physical symptoms arise.
